How many Americans think we shouldn't take sides in the Israel-Palestine conflict?

The answer, surprisingly enough, is 71%! From an interesting article about popular opinion being politically taboo. The main example given is that the vast majority of Americans (one side never gets over 70% on a controversial issue like this--though I guess that's the point, it isn't really controversial among actual Americans) don't think we should take sides in the Israel-Palestine conflict, yet if any politician promotes that view they are skewered. It is troubling that we can't really have any substantial debate on this issue. I agree with the view that we should be impartial; both sides have been pretty stupid in that conflict, and I think we should work towards peace and dignity for both Israelis and Palestinians, but I don't feel good about automatically backing up everything Israel does.

What do you think? Should we become more impartial in the region, or is our pro-Israel stance justified? Do you think there are some topics in American politics that are just viewed as taboo despite popular opinion that goes against the status quo?

Just in case you weren't convinced yet...

Waterboarding is indeed torture. So says Christopher Hitchens, who didn't think so until he underwent the process himself and recorded it on video for us all to see. So sad that our country is ok with torturing people.
